The types of personal data we collect and why we collect them
Your comments

Whenever a visitor leaves a comment on the site, we collect the data shown in the comment form. In addition, we collect the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string.

The Gravatar service may use an anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) to check if you use it.  In the context of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public after approval.

Media

Uploading images to the website should avoid images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS). The website allows visitors to download and extract location data from images.

Cookies

You can opt-in to save your name, email address, and website when you leave a comment on our site. They allow you to leave a comment without having to enter your details again. The lifespan of these cookies will be one year.

When you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. A cookie such as this does not contain any personal information and is discarded when the browser is closed.

Additionally, we will set up several cookies when you log in so that your login information and screen display preferences are saved. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

An additional cookie will be stored in your browser if you edit or publish an article. This cookie does not contain any personal information and only indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. There is a one-day expiration date on it.

Embedded content from other websites

There may be embedded content on this site (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). If the visitor views embedded content from another website, the same behavior occurs.

Websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with embedded content, including if you have an account and are logged in.

Who we share your data with
How long we retain your data

You will be able to view your comments and their metadata indefinitely if you leave a comment. Rather than holding follow-up comments in a moderation queue, we will automatically recognize and approve them.

When users register on our website (if any), we also store their personal information in their user profiles. A user’s personal information can be viewed, edited, or deleted at any time (except their username). Administrators of the website can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you. This includes any data you have provided. It is also possible for you to request that any personal data we hold about you be erased. We are not required to keep any data for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
